The best diet for diabetes is a healthy and sensible diet with limited carbohydrates. I often hear the question, what is the best diabetes diet? For starters, there is no diabetes diet.

Diabetics should always follow a diet that's rich in lean proteins, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and low to moderate amounts of carbohydrates.

When we eat, our body converts the food into energy. The insulin in our body helps move the sugar to our cells, where it's used as energy. Those who diagnosed with diabetes have trouble producing insulin. Without insulin to move the sugar into our cells, the glucose gets stored in our blood, and causes health problems.

Diabetics can also add exercise to their overall healthy lifestyle. Exercise is a must for those who are proactive in managing their diabetes. It'll help keep your weight and blood glucose levels under control. Exercising will also keep your heart strong and protect it from heart disease -- which affects many with diabetes.

You should try exercising at least every day for 15-20 minutes. Before exercising, talk to your doctor and ask him or her types of exercises they recommend for you. Low impact exercises are great for diabetics because it reduces the pressure on your feet.

If you like to jog, make sure you get a pair of running shoes that's designed for comfort-ability, and absorbs shock well. If you're new to exercise, start out with low intensity movements and build yourself up over time. Don't overdo it in the beginning. Swimming, biking and rowing are great low impact exercises, and great for the heart.

Alcohol should also be avoided by most that have the disease. When we drink alcohol, it's processed in our bodies like fat. Your diet should also be low in sodium, which can cause high blood pressure. Because diabetes can cause heart problems, you should always eat foods that are low in cholesterol.

You see, there is no special diet for diabetes. We all should eat the same healthy foods, exercising, and paying attention to what our body is telling us. Sure, we won't eat perfect foods every day, but we all should eat a consistently healthy diet.

If you manage your diabetes through good eating habits and exercise, you will have fewer complications from diabetes and have a more robust life. Remember to also keep your stress levels under control, and get plenty of sleep. You can live a normal life after being diagnosed with diabetes -- if managed properly.

We all should learn more about the causes of diabetes. And how to protect ourselves from diabetes.
