A diabetes diet should be one that's high in fiber and low in fat. Because diabetics have trouble controlling their blood sugar levels, they should stay away from foods that cause the blood sugar to spike.
Being a diabetic doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of the foods that you love, that aren't the healthiest for you. It means you should watch your diet more carefully, and eat a consistently healthy diet, and so should everyone else who doesn't have diabetes.

Eat greens such as: spinach, kale, turnip, mustard and collards. These greens provide plenty of fiber, calcium and other healthy vitamins and minerals. Eating fiber rich foods will help improve your cholesterol, and lower your risk of heart disease.
Because many diabetics suffer from high blood pressure, they should always monitor their sodium intake. Studies show that salt is linked to hypertension, and can lead to high blood pressure. If you get in the habit of avoiding salt, eventually, your taste buds will adapt.
A diabetes diet should also include drinking plenty of water to help move the nutrients through your body. Water helps speed up your metabolism which helps burn calories. It also keeps you feeling fuller longer, and preventing you from over-eating.
The proper diabetes diet isn't a special diet; it's how we all should eat - everyday. If you haven't been eating a diabetic friendly diet, start slowly by adding more healthy foods to your menus every day until you're consistently eating a diabetic friendly diet.
Saying no to the pizza, and yes to the chicken breast and veggies isn't easy. But, after you're diagnosed with diabetes, choosing the right foods to eat is a must. There will be days when you just would rather skip the healthy stuff, and eat fatty starchy foods.
On those days, remember, you're eating to live now. As a diabetic, it's no longer about what you want to eat, but rather what you need to eat to stay alive.
